The Allied Health Program at GVSU

Launch Your Health Care Career with a B.S. in Allied Health Sciences at Grand Valley State University

Are you passionate about health care but not necessarily interested in becoming a nurse? The Allied Health Sciences (AHS) degree at Grand Valley State University offers an exciting and flexible pathway for students in Northern Michigan who want to pursue a wide range of health-related careers — from clinical roles to non-clinical positions, and even advanced graduate programs.

Why Choose Allied Health Sciences?

The B.S. in Allied Health Sciences degree is designed to give you the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to thrive in a variety of health care roles. The program provides two primary pathways:

  1. Prepare for Clinical Roles in Health Care
If you're interested in direct patient care, the AHS degree provides a pathway to clinical settings. You'll gain foundational skills that can lead to clinical role training through internships, advanced programs, or one of GVSU's professional graduate options.

  2. Prepare for Non-Clinical Health Care Careers
For those who prefer to work behind the scenes, the AHS degree also prepares you for critical non-clinical roles in health care, including health administration, medical technology, public health, and policy. These positions are essential to the operation of health care systems and provide valuable support to patient care.

Your Next Step: Graduate School

In Northern Michigan, Grand Valley students have access to many graduate programs through the Traverse City Regional Center. They include the following.

Master of Physician Assistant Studies (M.P.A.S.)
The Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) program at Grand Valley State University prepares students to become Physician Assistants (PAs) — licensed healthcare professionals who practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. PAs diagnose and treat medical conditions, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and provide patient care in a variety of settings.

Master of Athletic Training Combined Program (AHS/M.A.T.)
Athletic trainers are highly skilled health care professionals trained to prevent, examine, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate injuries and medical conditions. The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) defines them as essential members of the healthcare team, specializing in both acute and chronic injury management.

Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (M.S.)
An Occupational Therapist (OT) helps individuals of all ages perform everyday tasks by improving their ability to engage in activities like dressing, cooking, working, or playing. OTs work with patients to develop customized therapy plans that may include exercises, adaptive tools, and environmental changes to enhance independence and quality of life. They practice in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and private practices, assisting people with physical, mental, or developmental challenges.

Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)
Grand Valley State University's M.P.H., offered by the Department of Public Health, prepares students by enhancing career opportunities through the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative problem solving research skills, service, and experiential learning. Public health professionals promote good health and prevent disease within communities. The M.P.H. provides graduate and community-based education and research grounded in social justice to help meet these goals.
